Notes on GTM, marketing, career and other side quests

Portrait of Varun Choraria

I’m a marketing professional and I’ve worked in the B2B SaaS space for about a decade now. I’m also a speaker, author, ex-host of a podcast, bodybuilder, and martial artist. I moonlight as a cat dad.

Now

I’m with GTM Buddy (Series A), where I’m helping create the Revenue Activation category and managing the marketing team.

I was one of their earliest customers, and have been a spectator to their growth over the years. I’ve always been passionate about products that help sales, so this configuration was a natural next step for me.

On the side, I’m learning everything Agentic AI. I believe the future will be one-person marketing teams, running a swarm of agents. GTM motions will be shipped in < 1 day, and scaled and managed with the help of agents.

What I’ve done

Uni days

I founded my first agency when I was 19, and worked with enterprise clients. During the 3 years that I ran the agency, we offered services like website, design, video, content and digital marketing.

During that time, I also spoke at events across various universities, wrote a book, gave talks at various marketing conferences. I also built a no-code MBA bot on Facebook Messenger that taught the core frameworks of business in an interactive manner. It got 1K+ users in <24 hours.

By qualification, I’m a mechanical engineer. I was mostly an average student, scraping by in academics. However, my final year project was funded by the State Govt. of Karnataka. To this day, I don’t know why.

Early years

I got my first job at a Series C startup, Vymo, and was the founding product marketing member. I helped position the product and enable sales, which led to the company achieving $20M ARR from $5M in 2 years. The top 5 banks and insurers across APAC were our customers. I saw the journey from Series A to Series C.

I was the go-to guy for building best-in-class presentations, homegrown no-code tools, and being in lockstep with sales across deals.

I also relocated to Chicago, Illinois to lead product marketing there. I helped crack our first $M deals during my time. Still a Bears fan to date.

On the side, I consulted and freelanced with multiple startups to help them build tools using Notion and Glide. I also supported them in running demand gen, sales enablement and product marketing.

One side quest I took up was running my CHRO podcast during the COVID years. I spoke to 30+ leaders from GoJek, Oracle, Infosys, MetLife, Razorpay and more.

Recent past

I joined Freshworks after Vymo. I took up the job because I wanted to explore something net new. I also wanted to see how things worked at scale. I picked up the PLG charter and set up the new business and expansion PLG motion from scratch, opening up a whole new revenue channel with $0 marketing spend.

Not many side quests here, work kept me incredibly occupied. I did speak at another marketing conference about setting up PLG motions, and did some consulting work.

What I’m into besides work

I love science fiction, horror, mystery and psychological thrillers. I love watching films, and probably spend too much money on that aside from my app subscriptions every month.

For fun, I’m into bodybuilding. I used to be a swimmer, a long-distance cyclist and I also have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Sports and fitness are a crucial part of my everyday.
